Hug-Ready Goldendoodles: The Guide to Coat Care

To Brush or Not to Brush? (Spoiler: You definitely need to brush.)

Maintaining the Signature Windsong "Teddy Bear" Glow

If you’ve recently brought home a Windsong puppy, you are likely currently obsessed with their coat. It’s soft, it’s wavy, it smells like puppy dreams, and it makes them look exactly like a stuffed animal come to life.

But here’s the thing about that iconic "Teddy Bear" look: it doesn’t just stay that way by magic. Because our Goldendoodles are bred for those plush, non-shedding coats, they don’t lose hair on your sofa—instead, that hair stays trapped in the coat. If it isn't brushed out, it creates "mats," which are essentially tiny, stubborn tangles that can turn a fluffy dog into a felted one very quickly.

Maintaining the "Golden Life" aesthetic requires a bit of a routine, but we promise the snuggles are worth the effort. Here is how to keep your Windsong baby looking like a masterpiece.

Beware the "Puppy Coat" Trap

For the first few months, your puppy’s hair is incredibly easy to manage. It’s fine, silky, and rarely tangles. This is the "honeymoon phase." Around 6 to 10 months old, your puppy will begin to transition into their adult coat. This is when the soft puppy hair can get tangled in the new, denser adult hair. If you aren't in a solid brushing habit by then, you’ll be faced with the "shave-down" at the groomer—the heartbreak of every Doodle parent. Start your grooming routine on day one to get them used to the feeling!

The Magic of "Line Brushing"

If you are only brushing the very top layer of the hair, you’re likely leaving mats close to the skin where they do the most damage. The secret to a fluffy, mat-free Doodle is a technique called "line brushing."

Essentially, you pull the hair up and brush small sections from the skin out to the ends. It’s the only way to ensure those "hug-a-cloud" waves stay airy and tangle-free. Think of it as a nightly bonding session; put on your favorite show, grab a slicker brush, and work through one section at a time while your "Velcro dog" leans against your shins.

Finding Your Grooming Soulmate

Even with great home care, your Windsong Doodle is going to need a professional "spa day" every 6 to 8 weeks. Finding a groomer who understands the "Teddy Bear" cut is essential. You’re looking for someone who knows how to keep the face round, the muzzle blocky, and the eyelashes long. We always recommend bringing a photo of your puppy’s parents from our "Collection" page to your groomer so they can see exactly what the "Windsong Standard" looks like!

The Essential Toolkit

You don't need a hundred tools, but you do need the right ones. A high-quality slicker brush and a metal "greyhound" comb are the gold standard for Goldendoodles. The slicker brush does the heavy lifting, and the comb acts as your "truth-teller"—if the comb can’t slide through the hair from skin to tip, you’ve found a mat that needs a little extra love.

Growing Together

Grooming isn't just about vanity; it’s about health and connection. When you spend time brushing your dog, you’re checking for bumps, scratches, or ticks, and you’re reinforcing that "Windsong bond." It’s another way we ensure our puppies stay "emotionally in tune" with their families.

We are currently putting the finishing touches on some "how-to" grooming videos for our upcoming Client Hub to show you exactly how we maintain that signature glow here at the nursery. In the meantime, keep those brushes moving and those "Teddy Bears" fluffy!
